| MIMES IN THE WINDOWS PHOTO FORMAT: 35MM FILM I found these mimes wondering around Gothenburg one cold autumn day. They were making their performance in some clothes shop windows in a busy shopping street. I am not sure if they were promoting the shop or if they were just giving people a free show. Probably they did both! These strange creatures changed their positions randomly and even copied people watching them creating a silent communication between the actors and the people out in the cold. The only thing I regret is not taking more pictures… |
SATTA OUTSIDE 2008 PHOTO FORMAT: POLAROID 600 Satta outside 2008 is an annual open-air music and art festival that takes part in an old yacht harbour built many years ago during the soviet times of Lithuania. This beautiful relic is still in use for it’s original purpose and still has the old buildings that are rotting away and will be demolished in a few years. This gave a group of creative people an opportunity to use it for an amazing freedom of mind festival, by decorating it with art, music and thousands of smiling faces. |
PIERCING SARA PHOTO FORMAT: DIGITAL I have heard about people obsessed with tattoos and piercing, but I had never met anyone like that before. Then I met Sara – a girlfriend of my collage roommate. Once I heard she was going to get her upper lip pierced with a sewing needle in our bathroom I took an opportunity to document this event with my photo camera. |

| CHINA PHOTO FORMAT: DIGITAL I traveled for a month in China and it wasn't nearly enough for me to get fully acquainted with this beautiful country filled with so different culture from ours. I am glad that I have had a chance to spend some time there, meet interesting people and learn about their past and present. I really hope to go back there someday but until then all I have are my memories and these photos. |
SOLARGRAPHY PHOTO FORMAT: LIGHT SENSITIVE PAPER Solargraphy is a very primitive and simple technique to take extremely long exposure photos of the Sun movement by using a pinhole camera. All you need is a lightproof can or box, a sheet of light sensitive photo paper, a tiny hole instead of a lens and a lot of patience while waiting for the results. I have learned the hard way that to find a safe place to hide your pinhole camera from the curious eyes is also very important. |
PEACEFUL SOLDIER PHOTO FORMAT: DIGITAL Mykolas Juzko is one of my regular models that help me out with my photo and art ideas. This time he posed for me as a soviet soldier, wearing his grandfather’s genuine soviet military uniform. After just an hour long photo session and some digital editing we got a nice result – a small series of old fashioned portraits of a young Russian soldier. |

| OVEREXPOSED PHOTO FORMAT: DIGITAL As I was just starting to get in to photography and bought my first digital SLR I started exploring this world that was quite new to me. Soon I discovered overexposure that led me to taking these pictures. Thankfully Juste agreed to model for me. A few of these pictures ended up as favourites in some photography internet communities encouraging me to continue taking pictures. |
ÖLAND PHOTO FORMAT: DIGITAL Back in the day when I was living in Nybro (a small boring town in south of Sweden) my greatest escape from the routine life was driving my car around Öland. This long island in the Baltic coast of Sweden is a perfect place for doing just that. Here I discovered a lot of old fisherman villages, ruins, amazing nature, and other fantastic stuff. Since I moved out from Nybro these weekend drives are the only thing I miss. |
PARTY LOMOGRAPHY PHOTO FORMAT: 35MM FILM I discovered lomography in the summer of 2008 when I got a Lomo Colorsplash camera as a present and I was hooked ever since. I joined lomography.com and was inspired of all the cool pictures I found there that were taken with these simple plastic cameras. Soon I bought some film and started taking colourful pictures of my friends at parties. I fell in love with this form of party photography but unfortunately 35mm film is getting more and more expensive to take everyday pictures with. |

| ON TOP OF THINGS PHOTO FORMAT: DIGITAL One quite warm January night me and my brother Linas Kutavicius decided to chill out with a bottle of wine on the roof of DCR studio in Den Haag, Holland. Bright city lights and sounds surrounding this unusual place for drinking was more then inspiring to take some self-portraits. Using a flash, long exposure and my old Russian fisheye lens I got some pictures telling the whole story. |
BLACK AND WHITE FILM PHOTO FORMAT: 35MM FILM I started to use film for a quite some time ago, but I had never felt the full power of it until I developed my first roll and copied some shots on paper. From that day I always carry a compact analogue SLR with black and white film, ready to shoot anything that draws my attention. Digital photography became very boring ever since I have found this new hobby. |
WORLD THRU A TINY HOLE PHOTO FORMAT: 35MM FILM Once I found out about camera obscura (aka pinhole) I couldn’t believe how interesting and simple optics can be. All you need is a small dark box to contain your film, a tiny hole and a shutter. I recommend trying taking pictures with a pinhole camera to every amateur photographer. It’s fun, simple and it is the best way to learn more about photography and how everything works. |

| INSTANT PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTO FORMAT: INSTANT FILM There is nothing better than to hear the buzzing noise of the legendary Polaroid camera after pressing the shutter and then watching how the image magically appears in your hands. It was a sad day for all instant photography lovers when Polaroid discontinued producing their analogue products. Luckily, this legendary photographic material has been saved and improved by The Impossible Project. |
SPONTANIOUS PORTRAITS PHOTO FORMAT: DIGITAL Taking nice portrait photos is challenging but also a lot of fun. One of my favorite ways of doing it is to take the shot when a person least suspects it. It is important for me to reflect the story behind a person that I am taking a picture of and make it look as natural as possible. On the other hand I like sometimes to break all my rules by placing people in the chosen environments and making them pose to get a conceptual image. |
STUDENT LIFE PHOTO FORMAT: DIGITAL A life of a student is filled with long sleepless nights of studying, creative ideas for how to survive with minimal food resources and of course all the crazy parties that we will all remember for years. To capture the party atmosphere in a photo means you have to be a part of it yourself. So a couple of beers, a smile on my face and a camera in my hands was the way I have spent my fair share of Friday nights during my university education. |
